Children

Children and young people from 3 years old are offered classes in Ballet, Musical Theatre Dance, Tap Modern Jazz and Contemporary Dance. Ballet, Modern and Tap classes from Primary upwards follow the ISTD syllabus. Students are offered the opportunity to take formal exams or just dance for fun!

Dance offers children structure, respect for others and a healthy, creative outlet to express themselves. My aim is to nurture healthy dancers, both mentally and physically.

All students are given the opportunity to perform on stage in our annual showcase as well as the prestigious ISTD Imperial Ballet Awards for those students, grade 1 and above, who gain distinctions in their exams.

Parents are invited into the last class of each term for our “Watching Day” to see how their child is progressing in class.

Ballet Classes

Syllabus and non-syllabus classes

Ballet Classes

Children’s Ballet is taught following the syllabus of the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing), one of the world’s leading dance examination boards.

Ballet is a fantastic way for both girls and boys to develop and refine gross motor skills, flexibility, fitness and social interaction. Classes for young children are structured to learn through fun, role-play and imagination! The Grades have been devised to provide a worthwhile sense of achievement for children and young people who dance for recreation and for children hoping to pursue a career in classical ballet.

Although children are offered the opportunity to take exams, there is no pressure and students can just dance for the love of it!

Find the perfect class below. Age ranges are just guidelines. If a child falls in the middle of one of the class age ranges, I will decide the most suitable class for them after a trial lesson.

ISTD – Imperial Classical Ballet

The use of the Imperial Classical Ballet syllabi gives the teacher guidance in correct and safe teaching methods for all age groups and at all levels from beginner to professional. Children and students are encouraged to acquire a sound basic technique combined with an understanding of co-ordination and musical interpretation which are the essentials of a pure classical training. Numerous outstanding teachers, and classical dancers in major international ballet companies, have been wholly trained within the Imperial Classical Ballet syllabi.

Children’s Examinations

These have been devised to provide a worthwhile sense of achievement both for children and young adults who dance for recreation and for children hoping to pursue a career in classical ballet. The Grades develop a child’s technical ability and understanding, giving him or her a sense of dance, poise and an understanding of its relation to music. For each Grade the candidate is required to perform one of the set dances or classical variations appropriate for that level, thus developing their use of mime. Additionally there are mime and music sections in each of the Class Tests (Pre-Primary).

A series of examinations has been created from children’s grades through to professional teaching qualifications. The children’s work is based on natural movements: walking, running, jumping and skipping. It is designed to encourage an imaginative and rapid response from beginners. The Jazz Awards provide a basic grounding in modern jazz, and are ideal for the late beginner or as a recreational course of movement. Boys’ work has been developed to meet increasing demand for a modern dance training for boys.
